2 Overview (1) Summary of Products AIRS L1B (VIS/NIR radiances, microwave brightness temps) AIRS L2 (standard retrieval, cloud cleared radiances, support product) AIRS images via WMS (VIS radiances, CO, Bt_diff_SO2, Dust score) Aqua attitude/ephemeris MLS L2 (Temperature, Ozone) Aura attitude/ephemeris Metrics Latency Data available within 80-140 minutes of observation 98% of data available within 3 hours of observation (average month) Distribution 150 – 200 K files per month 0.8 – 1.2 TB per month Users 32 registered users 17 AIRS, 11 MLS, 3 both, 1 Aqua ephemeris

Overview (2) NRT versus Standard AIRS Version 5 algorithms running in both systems (same code) Predicted ephemeris used in NRT system MLS MLS NRT Temperature and Ozone data lower quality than standard products Streamlined L2 algorithm utilized to meet latency requirements NRT products are 15 minute granules; standard products are daily files Redundancy Status Dual RBD feed from EDOS Two servers for each function (acquisition, processing, distribution) Data acquisition, processing servers on single UPS served by redundant PDUs Distribution servers on separate UPSs served by redundant PDUs All servers on a redundant network Multiple firewalls, switches, routing) Automated fault detection, manual failover User Support Help-disc@listserv.gsfc.nasa.gov Help-disc@listserv.gsfc.nasa.gov 301-614-5224 3

4 Element Changes since December 09 Workshop New Products AIRS L1B channel subsets available in BUFR Services AIRS images served through WMS available in multiple formats (PNG, GeoTIFF, KMZ) System Changes AIRS Production rules Use adjacent granules when available (L1) Use ancillary data (L2) Redundant distribution servers User Registration fully implemented Web portal updated with data quality information
5
5 Additional Upgrades for Discussion Suggested LANCE-MLS Enhancements Improved MLS L2 product quality (MLS SIPS) Consistent with latency requirements MLS considering adding water vapor product Potential LANCE AIRS Enhancements AIRS L1B in BUFR (custom channel selection) Apply format conversion service for Standard Products to NRT data AIRS L2 available in netCDF Provide NRT data through OPenDAP service Granule maps associated with WMS images Variable subsetting Applications of AIRS parameters for environmental monitoring Giovanni for select NRT parameters

MLS NRT Product Quality 1 The Aura MLS NRT data products are derived from a reduced Level- 2 algorithm which uses a fast linearized forward model resulting in computational resource requirements reduced dramatically compared to the standard product processing suite. NRT Temperatures are within 1-2 K of the MLS standard product Recommended range for scientific use is 178 hPa to 1 hPa NRT Ozone is within 5-10% (ppmv) of MLS standard product Recommended range for scientific use is 68 hPa to 0.2 hPa Improvements are needed for NRT products to be viable globally for the UTLS region and above the stratosphere for temperature 1 From presentation by Alyn Lambert (MLS NRT PI) to NASA Hq Aug 2009
