Question of the day

The right answer is D

Parallel Structure or construction

What is it? Parallel construction is when we present a list of things all in the same way. For example: if two things in a list are adverbs, the third should also be an adverb. If two things in a list are "to [verb]," then the other should also be in the form "to [verb]." To fix it, we just phrase all of the items in the list the same way.

The most common errors: Lists: – All items in the list need to be phrases similarly: I respect his eloquence and that he is brave. WRONG – you need both items to be nouns: – I respect his eloquence and his bravery

Another example: To learn what it means to love someone is accepting the flaws of others. – To learn what it means to love someone is to accept the flaws of others

Pairs- two items described: It’s so hard to decide between the cheaper priced meal or the higher quality one. – It’s so hard to decide between the cheaper priced meal and the higher quality one.

Try these: 1.Today, I want to not only go jogging but also dive. 2.Neither the fierce yelling nor the screams that were loud could wake Travis from his midday nap. 3.Taco Bell is not so great as some people say it is.

Faulty Comparisons Characters in Chekhov’s plays have always been darker than Vogel’s plays. – Charachters in Chekhov’s plays have always been darker than characters in Vogel’s plays.

Try some: 1.I like singing more than dance. 2.During the holidays, purchases of shoes outnumbered computers, toys, and jewelry combined. 3.To love someone deeply is truly understanding how another person feels.
