3 Making ATP  1. Creatine Phosphate  Requires no oxygen  Very fast  No waste products  Only small amounts of ATP are made

4 Making ATP  2. Anaerobic respiration  Makes ATP from glucose  Fast  No oxygen required  Only 2 ATP for each glucose  Waste product – lactic acid – causes muscles to burn

5 Making ATP  3. Aerobic Respiration  Makes ATP from glucose  Requires oxygen  Very efficient  Makes 38 ATP per molecule of glucose (lots)  Waste products – carbon dioxide and water

6 Muscle Fatigue  Tiredness  Happens when you need more ATP than your body can produce in muscles – due to low levels of oxygen  Slows down muscle contraction  Can cause muscles to stop working

7 Overcoming muscle fatigue  Breathing deeply and quickly to get more oxygen to muscles  Occurs until lactic acid is gone

8 Link with cardiovascular system  Cardiovascular system brings oxygen to muscles through the blood  Brings glucose to muscles cells  Gets rid of lactic acid
