Muscle Energy
2
ATP High Energy molecule Used for muscle movement (and many other things
3
Making ATP 1. Creatine Phosphate Requires no oxygen Very fast No waste products Only small amounts of ATP are made
4
Making ATP 2. Anaerobic respiration Makes ATP from glucose Fast No oxygen required Only 2 ATP for each glucose Waste product – lactic acid – causes muscles to burn
5
Making ATP 3. Aerobic Respiration Makes ATP from glucose Requires oxygen Very efficient Makes 38 ATP per molecule of glucose (lots) Waste products – carbon dioxide and water
6
Muscle Fatigue Tiredness Happens when you need more ATP than your body can produce in muscles – due to low levels of oxygen Slows down muscle contraction Can cause muscles to stop working
7
Overcoming muscle fatigue Breathing deeply and quickly to get more oxygen to muscles Occurs until lactic acid is gone
8
Link with cardiovascular system Cardiovascular system brings oxygen to muscles through the blood Brings glucose to muscles cells Gets rid of lactic acid
