1
DNA & Protein Synthesis How our genes make our traits
2
Nucleic Acids Nucleic Acids are a type of organic compound. DNA & RNA are examples. DNA is responsible for the code of every trait in an organisms body. Nucleotides are the monomers of DNA.
3
Nucleotides S P B There are 2 types of sugars: Deoxyriobose: (DNA) (Notice Deoxyribose is missing an oxygen) Ribose Sugar: (RNA) Each Nucleotide contains a sugar (S); one of 5 nitrogen bases (B); and a phosphate (P)
4
Nitrogen Bases There are 5 different types of nitrogen bases The sequence of nitrogen bases in a strand of DNA is what will determine genetic tratis DNA contains the nitrogen bases: Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, and Thymine RNA contains:Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine and Uracil (instead of Tymine)

Types of Nucleotides based on Nitrogen Bases DA PAdenine DG PGuanine DC PCytosine DT PThymine PURINES Pyramidines
6
Base Pairings Sugar Phosphate Sugar VERY IMPORTANT Nitrogen base pairs only pair up the following way: Adenine w/ Thymine Guanine w/ Cytosine Look at the diagram on the right Phosphate

Assignment #1 & 2 1.Complete “Chapter 30 Modern Genetics Sect Rev 30-2” ws (Front & Back) 2.Using DNA models (work with a partner or group of 3 NO LARGER) Complete PART 1 of the DNA Structure and Replication Molecular Model Activity WRITE YOUR ANSWERS ON NOTEBOOK PAPER (DO NOT TURN THE PAPER IN. YOU WILL USE IT TO FINISH THE LAB)
8
DNA replication 1.DNA unwinds 2.Double helix will unzip with the help of an enzyme called helicase 3.The complementary bases (A with T and G with C) will be added to each side of the old molecule. 4.The DNA will rewind or twist. NOTICE: Each of the 2 new DNA molecules will contain 1 new strand and 1 strand from the original molecule
9
DNA replication Draw this in your notes

Assignment #3 3. Using DNA models (work with a partner or group of 3) Complete PART 2 of the DNA Structure and Replication Molecular Model Activity Add the answers to the questions to the notebook paper that you used to complete assignment #2. When finished turn you paper into the appropriate period bin.
