1 Principles of the United States Constitution Pinckney Kilpatrick Government Period 2

2 Basic Principles There are 6 basic principles of the U.S. Constitution. 3 examples of the principles are: Rule of Law, Popular Sovereignty, and the Separation of Powers.

3 Rule of Law That individuals, persons and government shall submit to, obey and be regulated by law, and not arbitrary action by an individual or a group of individuals. The principle that all people and institutions are subject to and accountable to law that is fairly applied and enforced

4 Popular Sovereignty The doctrine that sovereign power is vested in the people and that those chosen to govern, as trustees of such power, must exercise it in conformity with the general will. Pre Civil War Definition: a doctrine, held chiefly by the opponents of the abolitionists, that the people living in a territory should be free of federal interference in determining domestic policy, especially with respect to slavery.

5 Separation of Powers A fundamental principle of the United States government, whereby powers and responsibilities are divided among the legislative branch, executive branch, and judicial branch.
