Before starting on page 8, let’s review some key setting descriptions. A Town sounds larger and more modern than a village. Salem is closer to a village. People all probably know one another, which could cause drama. Salem is strict. They don’t really have fun. It could cause people to rebel, especially young people.

Characterization types Direct Characterization – directly told (in this case, narrator tells us) Ex: Thomas Putnam “regarded himself as the intellectual superior of most”. Indirect Characterization – revealed through dialogue, actions, and reactions Ex: Thomas Putnam rolled his eyes while others were speaking.
