2-3 LINEAR FUNCTIONS AND SLOPE- INTERCEPT FORM
2
OBJECTIVES To graph linear equations –Linear function- a function whose graph is a line To write linear equations –Linear equation- a way to represent linear functions
3
UNDERSTANDING SLOPE-INTERCEPT FORM What is your slope? –Slope is the ratio of the vertical change and to the horizontal change between two points. –EX. Rise over Run
4
UNDERSTANDING SLOPE-INTERCEPT FORM CONT. What are your intercepts? You have two intercepts which are your y- intercept and your x- intercept The y- intercept is the point at which the line crosses the y- axis The x- intercept is the point at which the line crosses the x- axis
5
EQUATION The equation for slope intercept form y=mx+b The “m” would be your slope The “b” would be your y intercept Ex. y=3x-6 Ex. y=3/2+2
6
GRAPHING Y=3X-6 First you would plot your y intercept. Which is “-6”
7
GRAPHING Y=3X-6 First you would plot your y intercept. Which is “-6” Second you would plot your slope or rise over run. Which is 3 over 1
8
GRAPHING Y=3X-6 First you would plot your y intercept. Which is “-6” Second you would plot your slope or rise over run. Which is 3 over 1 Lastly you would connect the two points Your equation is now graphed
9
WRITING A LINEAR EQUATION IN SLOPE INTERCEPT If an equation is in standard form for ex. 6x - 3y = -12 First you have to isolate the y variable, to do that you would subtract the 6x to the otherside
10
WRITING A LINEAR EQUATION IN SLOPE INTERCEPT If an equation is in standard form for ex. 6x - 3y = -12 First you have to isolate the y variable, to do that you would subtract the 6x to the otherside You would get -3y = -6x – 12
11
WRITING A LINEAR EQUATION IN SLOPE INTERCEPT If an equation is in standard form for ex. 6x - 3y = -12 First you have to isolate the y variable, to do that you would subtract the 6x to the otherside You would get -3y = -6x – 12 Next you would have to remove the -3 from the y You would do that by dividing -3 through both sides.

When you divide that through you will end up with y = 2x + 4

When you divide that through you will end up with y = 2x + 4 y= 2x + 4 is now in slope intercept form
