RADIATION: ALPHA, BETA, GAMMA BY: SPENCER AND TREY
3
What is Radiation? the process in which energy is emitted as particles or waves. the complete process in which energy is emitted by one body, transmitted through an intervening medium or space, and absorbed by another body. the energy transferred by these processes.
4
Gamma Radiation Gamma rays, or gamma photons, are emitted from the nucleus of some unstable radioactive atoms Gamma photons are the most energetic photons in the electromagnetic spectrum
5
Gamma rays are the most energetic form of light Gamma rays can only form under extreme circumstances Ex: Nuclear Explosions
6
Effects of Gamma Radiation Along with cancer, health effects from exposure to gamma radiation usually appear quickly. Effects include burns and radiation sickness.
7
Radiation sickness is also called 'radiation poisoning.' It can cause premature aging, deformed body parts, or even death.
8
Exposed Patients
9
Burns
10
Beta Radiation Beta particles are high-energy, high- speed electrons or positrons emitted by certain types of radioactive nuclei such as potassium-40 The beta particles emitted are a form of ionizing radiation also known as beta rays
11
They are the equivalent of electrons Beta particles can be used to treat eye and bone cancer
12
Alpha Radiation Alpha particles consist of two protons and two neutrons bound together into a particle, which are identical to a helium nucleus.
13
Alpha particles are named after the first letter in the Greek alphabet, α. Because they are identical to helium nuclei, they are also sometimes written as He2+
