Chapter 7 Unit Question What are the components and applications of lines on the coordinate plane?
2
Open Learning Logs Date on Left…Section 7 – 9 on right
3
1)Write and name the two equation forms for lines we have discussed in this chapter. 2)What kind of lines do they leave out? 3)Why? WARM UP 7 – 9
4
Section 9 How do we graph lines with equations in STANDARD form ( A x + B y = C )?

Graph this… We could work the formula to put it into slope-intercept form… But there is a different way… HoffmaMagic! Find the intercepts! If a point is on the y -axis, what is the value of x ? If a point is on the x -axis, what is the value of y ? NOTE: graph counts by 2s

The Standard Form Equation: A x + B y = C Goal: Graphing Find the intercepts! x-intercept : let y = 0 and solve y-intercept : let x = 0 and solve Plot the two intercepts and connect the dots! Goal: Put into Slope-Intercept form Simply put, “Solve for y” That is, get y = something Which when you are done will be mx + b
8
Put in Standard Form (with INTEGER coefficients): Get the x and y on the same side of the = sign with NO fractions or decimals
9
Solve the following for the slope, m, and the y-intercept, b, in terms of A, B, and C. Assume B ≠ 0. (Put in Slope Intercept form of a line) Looking at what this means… Let’s see what this looks like Now plug into slope-intercept form
10
Construction workers in the old days got $10 for each DAY job and $15 for each NIGHT job. If a worker earns $150… Write this as an equation in standard form Let x = day jobs y = night jobs Now write in slope-intercept form Now plug into slope-intercept form With this many How many possible day jobs…night jobs? 49 015 100
