2 ND GRADE COMMON CORE SYMPOSIUM Teaching is the profession that teaches all the other professions. ~Author Unknown
2
Today We Will: ORGANIZE your binder FOCUS on a challenging standard SHARE ideas for teaching Speaking and Listening Standards
3
Standards Page The standards page is like the “pacing guide” we are accustomed to having. For each standard that is to be taught, there are given examples on how to assess. The suggested assessments can be adapted to meet the needs of YOUR school and YOUR students. The models can be used “as is” but can also be changed. Specific questions on assessing can be directed towards Rosie! She will follow Session 1!
4
Resources Literary Texts are negotiable! Exemplar Texts are nonnegotiable! Exemplar texts are a great starting point to reference and check to see what books your school currently has and what they do not.
5
Theme- A Season for Chapters It is suggested to teach the theme by using books by Cynthia Rylant, HOWEVER you can still use chapter books you have used in previous years. ** Four Seasons Poetry** This activity encompasses the theme, generating adjectives, thinking about our senses, and constructing poetry.
6
Strategies Currently the strategies page is found in the supplemental support section. It should be moved in front of the first standard divider page (the pink page). All activities and lessons listed on the strategies page can be found behind the corresponding standard divider page.
7
Standard Divider Pages Each “pink page” represents a standard that is to be taught within the first 6 weeks. Remember these are end of the school year expectations. The standards progression chart for that specific standard is found on this same page. This tells the teacher what the standard should look like 6 weeks into school. Behind the “pink page” are the lessons and strategies to teach that standard. It is a guide, the TEACHER should put her own spin to it and make it custom!

Making the Binder YOURS As a teacher, you have previous activities and strategies you have used to teach specific skills. USE THEM! If you are wondering, “What can I do this summer to prepare myself for Common Core?”. You can organize yourself! Go through your current files and see what you can use and adapt to teach the required standards for the first 6 weeks. Put them in the binder behind each standard divider page.
9
Modeled Lesson I will model for you how I might teach the standards W.2.2, W.2.7, and L.2.2e. This is not “the way” to teach these standards, this is only to give you an idea of how to teach it. You, the teacher, will want to put your creativity and personality into the lesson.
10
Speaking and Listening For some teachers, teaching speaking and listening skills will be new. Speaking and Listening standards can be taught in conjunction with your Morning Meeting. Creating a safe classroom community will help execute these standards. Students will be more willing to speak and share with the class when they feel comfortable. Setting procedures and STICKING TO THEM will make teaching these standards a little easier.

Which teacher are YOU? The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. ~William Arthur Ward
