Highway Safety Police main focus is order and public compliance Purpose leads to less vehicle collisions 40,000 highway fatalities a year in the U.S. Education is the primary strategy for reducing collisions Motor Vehicle stops are important to inform Able to demonstrate civility and respect to the public Traffic stops make that opportunity

Impaired Motor Operation Most accidents are attributed to persons driving under the influence Appropriate enforcement is immediate arrest Other Impaired driving Stroke, diabetes, shock, heart attack Alcohol will have a strong odor of acetone or a sweet smell

Impaired Motor Operation Ingestion of drugs whether they realize it or not Small amount of alcohol still changes judgments

Signs of Impairment Erratic Operation- slows down and speeds up Crossing the Center Lines- toward the traffic or shoulder Turn Signals- leave them on, not use them Swerving- deliberate and obvious swerve Wide or Narrow Turns No lights or other Equipment in use These are just indicators, not always going to find a problem

Motor Vehicle Stop Observing the Drivers Actions Breath Speech-slurred, running words together Eyes- glassy Stance- steady on their feet, maintain posture

Field Sobriety Test Test that help to determine the stability and coordination of a person in question Direction Following- verbal instruction and can they follow them Alphabet Test Walk and Turn, Heel to Toe- operating ability One Leg Stand Finger to Nose Test- head back Horizontal-gaze- following the pencil with eyes not head
