1 I can…Stoplight The stoplight is used to manage your behavior. I can define (tell the meaning) and use words related to time and sequence (before, after, first, second, then, and last) to describe a text.

2 Informational TextStoplight Texts that you read for information can be organized in different ways. A text can be organized by time order or sequence. What does that mean? *Think-pair-share –Turn to a classmate. Work together to create your own definitions for the words time order and sequence. Compare your definitions with another group’s.

3 SequenceStoplight A sequence is an order of events. Words like first, next, then, before, after, later, and finally all help to tell the order of events. When events happen at the same time, words like while, as, and at the same time can give you clues about sequence. * Think-pair-share- Turn to a classmate. Using words related to sequence, describe what you did after you woke up this morning to get ready for school. Have your partner choose a clue word they heard from your description and explain what this meant in your sequence of events.

4 Recipes & Instructions Some texts, like recipes and instructions, need to be organized by sequence because they show specific steps. *Think-pair-share- Find a classmate. Why would the steps in a recipe need to be followed in a certain order? Give an example of something that could happen if the recipe steps were not followed?

5 Snack Look at this example: This healthful snack is fun, easy to make, and delicious. Just read and follow these simple steps to make one for yourself. Last, sprinkle granola on top. First, mix yogurt and blueberries. Next, mix in almonds.

6 Stoplight *Think-pair-share- Turn to a partner. What do you predict will happen when someone tries to make this snack? How do you know this? Use specific sequence words from the recipe and tell what they mean in your explanation. A recipe must be followed in the correct order for the food to cook, mix, or bake correctly and taste good. You were right. This recipe for a healthful snack would NOT work. Now, let’s work together on the board to FIX this recipe. Justify, or prove your work is correct by defining and using words related to time and sequence. Describe how this text will now make sense to its readers.

7 History The stoplight is used to manage your behavior. Other texts, like texts about people or events in history, are also organized by sequence to help show you the order of events. They usually show a beginning, middle, and end. They also use sequence words such as first, then, and next.

8 Historical TextStoplight Let’s look at an example together: Original plans were made to deliver the Statue of Liberty in 1876 to celebrate the one-hundred-year anniversary of a very important United States event. However, getting the Statue of Liberty to the United States was no easy task. First, it had to be taken apart and packed into two hundred and fourteen crates. Then, the more than three hundred fifty pieces had to be put together. It took one-third of a year to put all the pieces of the statue together. Finally, on October 28, 1986, ten years later than planned, Lady Liberty celebrated her one-hundredth birthday. *Think-pair-share- Turn to a classmate and answer the following questions. Does the way this text is organized make sense? Describe how do you know using sequence or time order words form the text.
