Ch.2, Sec.3 – Chemical Properties chemical property: a property of matter that describes a substance’s ability to participate in chemical reactions -Two chemical properties you should be aware of: 1. flammability – the ability of a substance to burn 2. reactivity – the ability of two or more substances to combine and form one or more new substances Sodium + Water = Explosive Reactivity!

Ch.2, Sec.3 – Chemical Properties - Substances always have chemical properties, but they aren’t always easy to see. (wood is always flammable, but only observed when burning) - Scientists rely on characteristic properties (physical or chemical) to identify & classify substances chemical change: a change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties - Examples: batteries, digestion, soured milk, Alka-Seltzer, baking a cake, rusted nail, and B.O.!!!!

Ch.2, Sec.3 – Chemical Properties - signs of a chemical change are: smell, odor, change in color, heat, fizzing, foaming, sounds, or light given off - most chemical changes cannot be reversed! - matter always changes in a chemical change, but not in a physical change!
