7
Your turn! You will be given a card with a fabricated name of a product Your task is to create an advertisement for this fictional invention using all three persuasive techniques You can design a poster or write and act out a skit (choose one) – Check the rubric to ensure you are doing everything you need to do to get a 100% The more interesting your advertisement the more likely people are to “buy” your product!
8
Presentations Present your products to the class Make POSITIVE comments ONLY please! After all groups have presented you will vote for “the best” one You CANNOT vote for your own team!
9
Break 15 minute chat break with snacks THROW ALL TRASH IN THE WASTE RECEPTACLE PLEASE!!! Clean up your area before the break ends
10
Rhetorical Devices in Essays You will receive copies of several persuasive essays written by fellow classmates Notice how SPECIFIC these examples are; vague “he/she” kind of references will lower your score *Remember to be SPECIFIC Within each essay identify the types of rhetorical devices used (if colored pencils or markers are available color as listed): – Ethos (blue) – Logos (green) – Pathos (purple)
11
Your Turn! Read the following quotation: The family is the first essential cell of human society. Pope John XXIII Think about how a few decades ago many families had half a dozen or more children. Nowadays, more and more families are choosing to have only one or two children. Write an essay stating your position on whether small families are better than larger ones. Be sure to: -state your position clearly -use appropriate organization -provide specific support for your argument -choose your words carefully -edit your writing for grammar, mechanics, and spelling
12
Read Around Place a blue sticky note and an orange one on the back of each essay Pass your essay one pair to the right Read the new essay with your partner Make a POSITIVE comment on the back and a critical (helpful) suggestion on what they should do to improve the essay. Remember the axiom: do unto your neighbor as you would have done to you (in other words, write something you would like written to yourself) Keep passing the essays to the right until your own essay returns to you Read and discuss the comments with your group Discuss what you would do differently
13
Best Essay Vote for your favorite essay Again, it CANNOT be your own group’s essay!
14
Lunch/Break Take a 15 minute chat break or, hopefully, lunch!
15
Vivid Verbs Verbs in your essay should be boisterous not monotonous So let’s change these boring verbs up! Here is an example of a dull paragraph (the verbs are underlined):
16
“A Day in the Cafeteria” Yesterday, the students in the cafeteria were wild. They were like kindergartners. Flying food was in the air and on the floor. Teachers ran from the chaotic scene as they covered their heads with trays. Ranch dressing covered Mrs. Q’s already hideous hairstyle. Mr. P fell on Jello that covered the floor, and he fell right on his behind. Milk came out of people’s noses all over the tables. Yesterday was a wild day in the CHS Cafeteria.
17
Now here’s the AMAZING fix:
18
“A Day in the Cafeteria” Yesterday, the students in the cafeteria were wild. They behaved like kindergartners. Flying food filled the air and covered the floor. Teachers dashed from the spasmodic scene as they protected their heads with trays. Ranch dressing saturated Mrs. Q’s already hideous hairstyle. Mr. P slipped on Jello that carpeted the floor, and he landed right on his behind. Milk erupted out of people’s noses all over the tables. Yesterday was a wild day in the CHS Cafeteria.
19
Your Turn! In the example paragraph, taken from a student essay, the verbs or verb forms that are used more than twice are highlighted. See if you can change some of these repeated verbs and verb forms by filling in the blanks Now choose one of your group members’ essays. Pull out one or two of their paragraphs to “spice” up. Write the new paragraphs on the big paper to post for everyone to see! You should always do this in your own essays (remember repetition=boring and a LOW score )
20
Compelling Actions Hang your posters on the wall Gallery walk: – Walk around and view each groups’ paragraph – Make POSITIVE comments! – Discuss their engaging vocabulary words Vote for the most captivating paragraph
21
PLOT PRACTICE For your STAAR EOC you will have 4-7 passages in the reading section so next we will practice identifying some plot elements While viewing the film fill out the plot diagram Be as specific as possible when filling it out
