Where Do We Want to be? What does our department want to achieve? Our research should serve a higher purpose, should be more integrated, coherent and impactful Impactful on the human condition Serve the collective interest, rather than individual Not just understand and explain, but also question the status quo! Impactful on scholarship Continue to focus on concrete phenomena, develop middle range theories But use them to explore bigger questions e.g. Barney’s resource-based theory was prompted by his questioning “Why do some firms outperform others?” but also on “What causes inequality in society?” 4

How Do We Get There? Recruitment of good scholars who can: Improve integration and coherence in our research with a realignment around the human condition Improving work, commerce, health, education Rather than moving from one technological phenomenon to another, and applying methodological expertise to those phenomena, we should focus on specific and meaningful verticals Increase our multi-disciplinary collaboration With our CS colleagues, but also psychology, sociology, management Accelerate our progress toward meaningful impact Guide us in developing thought leadership Tie together our developments within research areas 5
