Kingdom Protista Known as the “catch all” kingdom
2
If you look at a drop of pond water under a microscope, do you know what you’re looking at? all the "little creatures" you see swimming around are protists.
3
All protists have a nucleus - eukaryotic. eukaryotic Protists are either plant-like, animal-like or fungus-like. Protists are either plant-like, animal-like or fungus-like. Can you tell which one is plant-like, animal- like or fungus-like?
4
Three types based on characteristics: Animal-like protists are heterotrophs. Animal-like protists are heterotrophs. Fungus-like protists are saprophytic heterotrophs. They consume dead organic material, therefore, are decomposers. Fungus-like protists are saprophytic heterotrophs. They consume dead organic material, therefore, are decomposers. Plant-like protists are autotrophic. They’re very important to earth because they produce an abundant amount of oxygen. They are the basis for the aquatic food chain. 5
Protozoans (animal like protists) “First animals” Heterotrophs Unicellular 4 groups based on means of mobility and manner of catching food Pseudopods - Ex. Amoeba Ciliates – Ex. Paramecium Flagellates – Ex. Euglena Parasitic – Ex. Plasmodium DRAW and label the following slides on left side
6
Algae (Plant-like protists) Autotrophs – they contain chloroplasts and make their own food. They produce much of Earth’s oxygen. Red algae Brown algae Dinoflagellates Euglenoids Diatoms Red algae Volvox
7
Dinoflagellates – cause “Red Tide”
8
Fungus-like protists Heterotrophic Long hyphae-like strands (physical appearance of fungi) Act as decomposers (they break down dead organisms by releasing digestive enzymes into the dead organism) Slime mold Water mold attacking fish
