Landforms due to Mechanical and Chemical processes
Weathering Slides Landforms due to Mechanical and Chemical processes

Frost Action: Frost Wedging

Frost Wedging

Unloading pressure: Exfoliation

Exfoliation Domes As erosion removes rock material from the surface of the land, the underlying rocks are under less pressure. As the pressure is lowered on them, the rocks expand upwards, creating fractures. Slabs of rock then 'peel off' along the fractures, creating domical hills. Famous 'Half Dome Mountain' is an example of an 'exfoliation dome.'

Salt Crystal Formation: Salt Wedging or caves

Salt Crystal Formation: Salt Wedging or caves

Plant/Roots: Root Wedging

Solution: Karst Topography

Solution: Karst Topography

Solution: Karst Topography

Oxidation: Oxygen reacts with iron in minerals to form iron oxide minerals (eg.hematite, rust)

Hydrolysis: Rain made up of Water and Carbon Dioxide form a week carbonic acid to erode surface structures. Sometimes the mixture of water and material create a clay like substance.
