1 53 +26 In Partial sums, we add the digits in the highest place value first. First we add the tens. Like this… 50 + 20 = 70 70 Notice that the “7” is in the “tens” column and the “0” is in the “ones” column. Then we add the ones. Like this… 3+6 = 9 9 Next, we draw our equal line, then our addition sign, + and finally, we add out two partial sums to get our answer! 79 It may help to draw a line to separate place values before you begin partial sums. Like this…

2 184 +277 First add the hundreds 100+200=300 300 Then you add the tens 80+70=150 Don’t forget that there are 15 tens and 0 ones! 150 Next you add the ones! 4+7=11 11 + Finally, you add the sums together! 461 PART IAL SUMS!! …How much or How many in all ? …all together?

3 James had a collection of 184 famous people toe nails. Olivia had 277 toe nails. How many did they have all together? I know they want to find the total so I have to add. So, the best way for me is doing partial sums! First I add the hundreds. 100 + 200=300. Then I add the tens. 8 tens (or 80) plus 7 tens (or 70) Is 15 tens (or 150). Next I add the ones. 4+7=11. The final step is to add all my sums! 300 + 150 + 11 461 toe nails! And that’s my answer!
