CIVIL LAW = people sue each other – the loser pays money (as opposed to criminal law, where the government prosecutes a defendant, and the loser pays in time) DEFINITION OF TORT: a)Someone is responsible for doing something b)S/he does not do it well enough (or at all) c)Someone else gets hurt

Other crimes against the person 1.Suicide / attempted suicide 2.Assault (“the threat to hit / hurt”) and battery (actually hitting or hurting) 3.Rape = sexual intercourse without consent

FIRST DEGREE MURDER = murder with malice and pre-meditation (to plan ahead / think befo FELONY MURDER = a person is guilty of murder if s/he is part of a felony where a murder happens 2 ND DEGREE MURDER = with malice, but not planned

VOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER = like 2 nd degree murder, but the victim did something that would make a reasonable person kill
