Educating for a just and sustainable future

Acknowledgement of Country I would like to acknowledge that we are on the estates of the Larrakia people and give my respect to those present and to their ancestors. In particular, I want to pay my respects to Elders both past and present from here, across Australia, and internationally, for the wisdom they have shared with me over these past years.

 3 Respect to teachers  I also pay respects to teachers, reliable guides, past and present. My life has been enriched by the generosity and wisdom of these wonderful people

  In complex, postmodern, postcolonial democratic states how can academics and teachers bring the local and the global together to develop inner wisdom in themselves and their students, enabling a wise life? 4 Wisdom and the Wise Life

  For Indigenous and other traditionally-oriented peoples who want to modernize without westernizing, the struggle about what is the value of old wisdom is part of a critical struggle for distinctiveness, and for survival, culturally, ethnically and territorially  Even when in the majority, it has been hard for non- westernized peoples to identify homegrown forms of modern wisdom that provide reliable guidance for the globalized, fast-paced world 6 Old Wisdom and Modern Wisdom

 7 Pedagogical Pathway for the Emergence of Wisdom  Wisdom emerges as an outcome of a metaphysical articulation of ideas developed by following a pedagogical pathway, becoming embodied in individuals within the social resonance of specific localities  Important for education, academics and teachers can learn the pedagogical pathway that leads to the emergence of wisdom

  Thinking about the Modern University Thinking about the Modern University  Ways of knowing that are used in western economically developed countries, both consciously and unintentionally, are being cultivated in countries that have equally viable, sustainable and appropriate knowledge traditions  These ways of knowing also preserve an understanding of a pathway towards the cultivation of wisdom, arguably something that western cultures are in danger of forgetting 8 What is the Relationship of Wisdom to Postmodern Postcolonial Education ?
