THE ROCK CYCLE 4 th Grade Science Lab

The Rock Cycle

Types of Rocks  Made from bits of smaller rocks, shells, or bone  Carried by wind, water, ice  Pressed into layers over time  Means “fire made”  Formed from hot, molten rock material that has cooled and hardened SedimentaryMetamorphicIgneous  Begins as any type of rock  Changed by…  Pressure from rocks above  Heat from center of Earth

Examples of Rocks  Shale  Limestone  Sandstone  Granite  Basalt SedimentaryMetamorphicIgneous  Marble  Gneiss  Slate

Discovery Education Video  Basics of Geology: All About Rocks and Minerals Basics of Geology: All About Rocks and Minerals  Complete Video (23.19) or  Watch these two segments Crystallization: The Birth of a Common Rock (1:52) The Rock Cycle: Three Types of Rock (8:00)

The Chocolate Rock Cycle

Materials  Chocolate Blocks  Aluminum Foil  Hot Water  Plastic Knife

Make “Sedimentary” Chocolate Rocks 1. Scrape some small shavings from your chocolate block. 2. Gather the scrapings onto a piece of aluminum foil. Fold the foil over the scrapings and then press on it. 3. Open and observe the joined-together bunch of chocolate scrapings.

1. Make a small boat from the aluminum foil. 2. Place a small pile of your sedimentary chocolate, some scrapings, and a couple of small chunks into your aluminum foil boat. 3. Float your boat in medium hot water. 4. Observe. 5. Remove when the chocolate is soft to the touch. 6. Let the chocolate cool. Make “Metamorphic” Chocolate Rocks

Make “Igneous” Chocolate Rocks 1. Make a small boat from the aluminum foil. 2. Place a small pile of sedimentary and metamorphic chocolate and some small chunks into your aluminum foil boat. 3. Float your boat on very hot water. 4. Observe. 5. Allow the chocolate to completely melt and become a smooth liquid. 6. Remove and let the chocolate cool completely.
