URBANIZATION AND OVERPOPULATION KYLA ASSAYAG AND TOMMY FLYNN PERIOD 6

OVERPOPULATION the condition of having a population so dense as to cause environmental deterioration, an impaired quality of life, or a population crash Example: In Africa the lack of control over how many children a person can have is a big factor in the overpopulation.

CAUSES OF OVERPOPULATION IN AFRICA Some of the causes of overpopulation in Africa can be linked to the slave trade and ethnic wars that have occurred there. According to researchers current demographic trends persist, it is projected that the African population will reach 1.4 billion by 2025. According to Uniceff, by 2050, it is projected that one out of every three children born in the world will be an African

OVERPOPULATED CITIES IN AFRICA Currently the most overpopulated city in Africa is Nigeria with an increasing population of 155,215,573 people. Followed by Ethiopia with a growing population of 93,873,739 Other countries suffering from overpopulation include: Egypt (82.6 million) Democratic Republic of the Congo (67.51 million) South Africa (52.98 million) Sudan ( 37.96 million) Tanzania (49.25 million) Kenya ( 44.35 million) Algeria (49.21 million) Uganda (37.58 million)

URBANIZATION Urbanization is the increase in area or population of a city or town, and the process by which a rural area becomes a large population center In the 19th century, cities became manufacturing centers so unemployed people in rural areas often moved to the cities Occurs when many people are attracted to a certain area for a common reason (food, jobs, environment etc.)

CAUSES OF URBANIZATION The main causes of urbanization relate to peoples interests and needs. If an area is has a strong economy and good available jobs and education, people are more attracted to that area. The result of people being attracted to an area is urbanization. People move there More jobs are created and eventually there is overpopulation.

EFFECTS OF URBANIZATION AND OVERPOPULATION Intensive urban growth can cause greater poverty, with local governments unable to provide services for all people. Concentrated energy use leads to greater air pollution with significant impact on human health. Automobile exhaust produces elevated lead levels in urban air. Large volumes of uncollected waste create multiple health hazards. Urban development can magnify the risk of environmental hazards such as flash flooding. Pollution and physical barriers to root growth promote loss of urban tree cover. Animal populations are inhibited by toxic substances, vehicles, and the loss of habitat and food sources.

PLACES DEALING WITH URBANIZATION AND OVERPOPULATION Nigeria is the most populated with over 155 million people. Effects of the amount of people in this country include; Poor education Poor health Poor economy pollution

This is Nigeria, the most overpopulated city.

This is just one example of the many cities in Africa that is extremely overpopulated as the result of urbanization This is a picture of Ethiopia
