Bill of Rights Life Without the Bill of Rights

Objectives To describe how the loss of basic freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights would end American society as we know it. To show how a lack of freedom of speech can prevent individuals from making sound choices for themselves and their government. To understand that in our society, the rights that we enjoy are integral to our system of government, and without them, we cannot function productively.
22
Explanation of the movie… Future Fright: Losing the Bill of Rights This program poses the frightening question, "What would happen if our government eliminated the Bill of Rights?" That possibility is dramatically explored when, after living in a remote jungle without media access, the Gordon family returns to the U.S. Soon they learn that women and girls have been declared the legal property of men. The family comes to realize that the Bill of Rights is no longer in effect: females and minorities have lost all rights; boys are taken from their families and forced into military service. In a so-called election, Mr. Gordon is forced to vote for the incumbent government. When the family tries to leave the country, they learn that they may depart only if 12-year-old Todd is sacrificed as a lung donor for the son of a presidential supporter. The program leaves viewers to ponder choices they would make if faced with a similar situation.
23
Anticipation Imagine that the United States government had eliminated the Bill of Rights. Predict what it would be like to live in this country.
24
Future Fright: Losing the Bill of Rights Life without the Bill of Rights
25
What right do the Gordon’s demand at their interrogation? The right to an attorney
26
Why do the officers seize Margie and Mrs. Gordon at the airport? They are considered property because they are women
27
Why does the man waiting in line to vote support President Collins in the election? More jobs are available because women cannot work
28
What do the police threaten to do to Americans in other countries who criticize the U.S. government? Harm their families
29

30
Questions to think discussing After watching the program, has your opinion changed about which rights are the most important to you? Why? How did the dramatization make you feel? How plausible is this scenario? What protections are built into our government to preserve our rights and freedoms?

Create your own Bill of Rights A Teachers Bill of Rights… Teachers have the right to educate students by using newspapers and small groups. Teachers have the right to own a gun; however they can not bring it to school. Teachers do not have to house soldiers in their houses unless they are married to them. Students do not have the right to search through the teachers belongings unless they have been given permission. Teachers can not be charged with failing a child twice and students must pay teachers if they take their property (PENCILS!!!!) If students accuse teachers of a crime, they have the right to question the student and have the principal present. Teachers have the right to a trail by a jury if students sue the teacher for more than $20. Teachers can not get life in prison for failing students. Teachers have the right to go on vacation even though it is not listed in the student handbook. Those powers not given to the principal are reserved for the teachers.
32
Write! Write about a situation where men are the ones whose basic rights have been eliminated. How might women run things differently? Think about recent court cases that have been prominent in the news or a court case you have recently learned about. How might the press coverage, trial proceedings and verdicts have been different if there were no Bill of Rights
33
Closure How does the Bill of Rights offer protection for citizens? How are rights granted in the Bill of Rights limited by the interpretation of the judiciary branch?
34
