Graphs and Graphing Physical Science Mr. Holmes

Graphs A graph is a visual display of information or data. Graphs are useful for displaying numerical information. There are three important graphs: line, bar and circle.

Line Graphs Line graphs can show relationships where the dependent variable changes due to a change in the independent variable. It is great for showing a change over time. You can also show more than one event at the same time on a line graph as long as the one variable is identical.

Factors for building a Line Graph Choose a proper scale Use the x-axis for the independent variable The y-axis is used for dependent variable Connect the points Make sure that the units are the same

Bar Graphs A bar graph is used for comparing information collected by counting. Each bar represents a quantity counted at a particular time. The independent variable should on the x- axis and the dependent variable is on the y-axis.

Circle Graph Circle graph, also called a pie graph, is used to show how some fixed quantity is broken down into parts. The pie itself represents the total, or whole. Each slice represents a slice, as they all equal the whole

To find the angle of each slice, divide each component by the total and then multiply by 360. Or to find the percentage you can divide each component by the total and multiply by 100.
