Chemical Interactions Vocabulary
2
Investigation #1 Substances
3
1. Chemistry The study of substances and their interactions.
4
2. Substance A unique form or type of matter. --- there are millions of different substances on Earth. --- substances are made entirely of atoms.
5
3. Substances More than one substance.
6
4. Mixture Two or more substances mixed together, not chemically combined. ---- a mixture can be separated.
7
5. Particle The smallest piece of any substance.
8
6. Chemical Reaction The process in which substances are transformed into different (new) substances.
9
7. Chemical Name A way for scientists to refer to a particular substance using words that describe what the substance is made of. Example = Sodium Chloride
10
8. Chemical Formula A way for scientists to refer to a particular substance using symbols (a type of code) that describe what the substance is made of. Example = NaCl
11
9. Properties What can be observed about a substance such as color, smell, boiling point, melting point, texture, hardness, luster, and chemical reactivity.
12
10. Dissolve To cause a solute (white powder in our case) to pass into solution (the mixture of water and the white powder). --- Dissolving is basically when a substance “hides” in another substance. Salt can dissolve in water. The water is obviously present; the salt is also identified if you were to taste the solution. The salt is “hiding” in the water.
13
11. Atoms The tiny pieces that all matter – all the stuff in the world – is made of.
14
12. Scientific Argumentation A process used to convince others using evidence and reasoning.
15
13. Claim A proposed answer to a question about the natural world.
16
14. Evidence Information about the natural world used to support or refute a claim.
17
15. Product The substances that are produced when atoms rearrange during a chemical reaction.
18
16. Reactants The substances whose atoms rearrange during a chemical reaction
19
17. Endothermic Reaction A type of chemical reaction that gathers energy from its surroundings and stores it away.
20
18. Exothermic Reaction A type of chemical reaction that releases stored energy.
