Welcome Grade 9’s! Today’s Class: Introduction to an Inquiry Unit and Critical Thinking o Brainstorm list of decisions o How do we make informed decisions? Table group discussion: Buying a new computer o What are the 3 types of judgments? Brainstorm questions individually for each type of judgment What is an inquiry unit? o How does this relate to L.A and what can I expect from this class?

When was the last time you made a decision? You have 2 minutes to write a list of decisions you make. o Which are your everyday decisions? o Which are your important decisions?

How will you choose which model and brand of computer to buy? At your tables, discuss and list the actions you would take when making an “informed” consumer decision.

3 Types of Judgment Type 1: Factual Judgements o “Black or White” o One “right” answer o Just Google it! 300 x 4 = ? Who is Canada’s current Prime Minister?

3 Types of Judgement Type 2: Judgments of Preference o Multiple possible answers No correct answers o Answers are based on personal choice and emotional response (how we feel about something) Examples: What is your favourite band? Do you like to play hockey? What is your favourite flavour of ice-cream?

3 Types of Judgements Type 3: “Critical Thinking” Decisions o Complex Issues with multiple approaches o High-Stakes o Grey area o Requires research and different sources o Require critical thinking to form a reasonable judgment o Example: Choosing a career Deciding to have laser-eye surgery

What is an Inquiry Unit? High-Stakes, “real issue” with real consequences No single, correct answer. We cannot “Google” it Focus on the process Gather evidence, evaluate sources, consider new perspectives Make a reasoned judgment using evidence.
