2 DESIRED LEARNING OUTCOMES PROBLEM, NEED, AND SOLUTION DISCIPLINARY GROUNDING IN ANTHROPOLOGY THE GLOBAL STUDIES SEMINARS Binghamton University’s Global Studies Minor

3 Desired Learning Outcomes: Ability to … Use a language other than English in fundamental contexts of intercultural communication. Marshal knowledge of global diversity and commonality with respect to values, beliefs, and worldview. Make generalizations about cross-cultural differences in perspective with minimal oversimplification or stereotyping. Relate one’s globally-oriented coursework, language courses, study- abroad experiences, and related studies to overall educational, career, and personal goals.

4 Problem, Need, and Solution Problem: Students receiving Binghamton’s International Studies Certificate were not achieving the desired learning outcomes. Need: Substantive, credit-bearing pre-departure, in- country, and re-entry “intervention” Solution: A Global Studies Minor, with increased course requirements, including GLST seminars

5 Disciplinary Grounding in Anthropology Social-science methodology  most notably ethnographic participant-observation Humanistic breadth  emphasis on language and culture Multidisciplinary inclusivity  focus on interaction between history and physical factors in the development of different ways of life

6 The Global Studies Seminars GLST 394: The Study Abroad Experience  1-credit online course, taken in Winter or Summer Session  Completed during program abroad, however short or long  All of the assignments involve peer-to-peer interaction.  Emphasizes activities that engage and explore the study-abroad site. GLST 490: The Global Studies Capstone  2 credits, taken in the semester after return from study abroad  Meets 1.5 hours per week all semester  Half of the work consists of discussion of topics taken up in 394.  Other half consists of a summative capstone project.
