Tax on sugar,and other products shipped to the colonies. It also called for more strict punishment on smugglers. Step 2: Sugar Act 1764

Colonists had to provide British redcoats a place to stay & supplies. Colonists were mad! Step 3: Quartering Act 1765 (living)

Step 4: Stamp Act 1765 Tax on most printed materials: newspapers, playing cards, paper. Stamp proves the tax was paid on that item.

First act to cause serious tension. Stamps had to be paid for in silver coin – a scarcity. Sons of Liberty protest. Boycott of British goods Parliament repeal the act.

Just like under the Stamp Act, colonists organized a boycott of British goods.

Step 7: Boston Tea Party (Dec. 16, 1773) Protests against the Tea Act took place all around the colonies. They destroyed 342 chests of tea.

Step 8: Intolerable Acts 1774 Minutemen begin to prepare for a possible battle.

Step 9: First Continental Congress (Sept. 1774) Representatives from colonies had a meeting. Samuel Adams, John Adams, George Washington & Patrick Henry attended. Congress calls for a complete boycott of all trade with England.

War Begins Lexington & Concord British march to Concord to seize colonial weapons. Minutemen attack British – 273 redcoats die; less than 100 colonists. 2 nd Continental Congress meet & select Washington to head the military.
