T HESE ARE CALLED ………….. CHARACTER TRAITS descriptive adjectives that tell us the specific qualities of the character (ex: silly, creative, shy, quiet, etc.)

C HARACTER TRAITS ARE NOT: Emotions (mad, sad, happy) Emotions change frequently. Character traits develop over time

CLUES AUTHORS USE Indirectly Action Clues: Traits are revealed through actions or events. Ex: standing up to a bully = courage Verbal Clues: Traits are revealed by what the character says and how they say it. Ex: A character yells, “Because I said so!” = bossy Directly Other Clues: Traits are revealed through physical appearance, how they live, thoughts, feelings, etc. Ex: Sam never cleans his room = messy

LISTEN As you listen to the story, think about character traits of the main character in the story. After the story, we will identify character traits of the main character using a graphic organizer.
