November 29, 2010 Geometry Bellringer & Lesson

Bellringer 1.If my shoe size is 10.5 inches, what is my shoe size in yards? 2.What is the difference between the distance formula and the midpoint formula? 3.If school starts at 8:05 and ends at 2:15, how long is the school day. Write your answer as a fraction.

Bellringer Answer #1 1.Convert 10.5 inches to feet Now that we have feet, we know that the conversion between feet and yards is 3 feet = 1 yd So……

Bellringer Answer #2 2.The distance formula is used to measure the distance of an entire line that is slanted when you cannot count The midpoint formula is used to find the middle point (order pair of a line).

Bellringer Answer #3 6 hours and 10 minutes. Next we convert this into a fraction

Objective: Finding midpoints of a line segment Midpoint formula: M =

Example #1 Find the midpoint of the line below B(2, 6) A(-6, -5)

Solution to Example #1 Step 1: Step 2:

Solution to Example #1 continued…. A(-6, -5) B(2, 6) (-2, 0.5)

Independent Practice In your textbook, turn to page 30 and do problems 7 – 10. You have 15 minutes on this assignment, raise your hand if you have any questions

Group Activity You will be paired in groups of two to work on the following activity regarding midpoints. Students will look at a map of the west side of Chicago and find midpoints of line segments that link coordinates of west side monuments. Listen to teacher for further instructions

Homework Find the midpoint for the following problems 1.(2, 4) (-1,5) 2.(3, 8) (-6, -4) 3.(0, 0) (10, 12) 4.(0, -3) (2, 3) 5.(16, -16) (-2, 13)

Group Activity continued….. 1.What state does the coordinates (9, -1) lie in? Place a dot on this coordinate. 2.What state does the coordinates (4, 1) lie in? Place a dot on this coordinate. 3.Connect the dots with a straight line. 4.If I wanted to travel from the first point to the second point, what state do you think the midpoint would lie in? 5.Find the midpoint to see if you guess is true. 6.Find the distance of the line from point 1 to point 2.

Binder QUIZ TODAY Students will organize their binders and turn them in today for grade.
