How it all Started Believed to have descended from the Greek game of Harpaston. Same as the game today but without rules or boundaries. “A Breif History of the Game”

Evolution of the Game Football, Soccer, and Rugby are variations of harpaston. Big in England until Rugby took over and football moved to the U.S. "A Brief History of the Game."

Beginning of American Football Princeton and Rutgers played a game on November 6, 1869. Considered the birth place of football in the U.S.

Changes over the Years Cannot lock arms with teammates. Started with 3 downs to go five yards. Changed to 10 yard in 1906. Added 4th down in 1912.

Birth of the NFL Started as the APFA in 1920 On June 24, 1922 it changed to the NFL. Consisted of 18 teams in the beginning.

Oorang Indians The first and only Native American team. Consisted of all Native Americans.

Offensive Trouble in the 30’s Came up with three big rules because of low scoring: Move field goals to the front of the end zone. Added hash marks to stay in between on snap. Passes can be done anywhere behind line of scrimmage.

First Championship League split into two divisions(East and West) in 1933 Winner of each division would play for championship. Chicago Bear won first Championship. “PHOTOS”

NFL Draft Bert Bell thought of a draft at the end of the 1934 season. Started in 1936 First ever pick was Jay Berwanger who choose not to go pro

AAFC A league that tried to challenge the NFL in the 40’s Lasted four years until they could make a deal All other rival leagues lasted no more than 2 years at this time. Deal brought the San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Colts, and Cleveland Browns to the NFL

Early 50’s Started to broadcast games. Attendance was going down because of that. In 1956 commissioner Bell said you could only broadcast away games.

Changes in the 60’s In 1961 the season was lengthened to 14 games instead of 12. The hall of fame was opened in1963 in Canton, Ohio. A new AFL started in 1960 that rivaled the NFL “Get Witted Sports Blog”

The NFL and AFL Merge After six years the NFL and AFL merged in 1966. AFL payed NFL $18 mill over 20 years The best teams from the two would play for the championship. Championship renamed to the Super Bowl. Merged entirely in 1970

AFL and NFL In 1969 the NFL became the NFC and AFL to the AFC. NFC consisted of 13 of the 16 NFL teams. AFC consisted of 10 AFL teams and 3 NFL teams.

Teams added in the 70’s The NFL added Tampa Bay, Buccaneers to the AFC. Added the Seattle, Seahawks to the NFC. They switched conferences a year later.

Changes in the 70’s Goal Posts were moved back to behind the end zone. Started sudden death overtime. Started the bump rule and stricter referees Made season 16 games long

90’s Expansion Teams In 1995 Carolina and Jacksonville got teams. The Carolina Panthers for the NFC The Jacksonville Jaguars for the AFC “Photos”

00’s Teams In 2002 the leagues added the Houston Texans to have 32 teams. League changed from 3 divisions in each conference to 4 with 4 teams in each. “Photos”

Salary Caps Teams have to stay under a certain amount or be penalized. If over they must forfeit contracts or reconstruct them. Only allowed a 53 player roster.

Medical Issues The main injury would be concussions. Most player don’t tell people if they have one Can cause problems later in life

Should you play the game? Steve Kallis was talking about if you should let your child play football. Said there are many brain problems that can came from the game. Know the risks if you play the game.

Life after Retirement Average time is 3 years in NFL Many people have depression or brain problems after retiring Concussions are a big part of this

Autopsy In and autopsy report for Tom McHale who played 87’ to 95’ showed brain damage. Showed that died from and overdose that could have been because of all of his brain damage.
