3 Annexation Texas wanted to be annexed by the US for defense and money, but President Andrew Jackson didn’t want to go to war with Mexico.

4 Relations with Indians When Lamar became president, the relations with Comanche and Cherokee suffered. Fighting broke out and Texas pushed the natives westward.

5 Relations with Tejanos Although having supported independence, Tejanos suffered discrimination from white settlers.

6 Immigration Germans moved to Texas and established farming communities. Many of them opposed slavery. Settlement continued to expand westward. Texas was land rich and cash poor.

7 The Texas Rangers Formed to guard the frontier against Mexican and Indian attacks.
