Geographic Features of Africa
Deserts Rainforests Savannas Plateaus Rivers Waterfalls Valleys Mountains When finished exploring, click here…
5
Africa has …deserts A desert is a dry often sandy region with little rainfall, extreme temperatures, and few plants.
6
Africa has…rainforests
A rainforest is a forest with heavy yearly rainfall (over 100 inches per year!).
7
Africa has…savannas Savannas are rolling grasslands scattered with shrubs and a few trees. Savannas can be found between tropical rainforests and deserts.
8
Africa has…plateaus A plateau is an elevated (raised) area of flat land.
9
Africa has…rivers Africa is home to the Nile River, the world’s longest river (4,160 miles long!). There are two great branches of the Nile: the White Nile, from East Africa, and the Blue Nile, from Ethiopia.
10
Africa has…waterfalls
A waterfall is water from a stream that falls from a steep cliff and continues downstream.
11
Africa has…valleys A valley is a long lowland between ranges of mountains, hills, or other uplands, often having a river or stream running along the bottom.
12
Africa has…mountains A mountain is a natural elevation of the earth's surface having considerable mass, generally steep sides, and a height greater than that of a hill.
13
Africa has 3 deserts Africa is home to three deserts: the Sahara, the Kalahari, and the Namib; together they cover more than a quarter (25%) of the continent. 1 2 3
14
The Sahara Desert The Sahara is the largest desert in the world, covering part or all of eleven African countries. The word “Sahara” is from the Arabic word for desert.

The Namib Desert The Namib, in southwest Africa, is one of the hottest, driest places on Earth, with less precipitation (rainfall) than even the Sahara.
21
The African Rainforests
Only one fifth of Africa is actually rain forests.
22
African Savannas The animals that live in savannas have adapted to a great deal of changes in their food supply throughout the year. During the wet season, there is plenty of food and water. But during the dry season, food and water is hard to find. Many savanna animals migrate to deal with this problem.
23
Ethiopian Plateau The Ethiopian Plateau is between 5,000 and 6,000 ft high. The plateau is cut by many deep valleys. The Nile River flows through the center of the plateau from its source, Lake Tana, Ethiopia's largest lake.
24
The Nile River The source of the Nile is Lake Victoria. It takes 3 months for the water to flow from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea!
25
Victoria Falls The Victoria Falls are almost a mile wide with a drop of over 330 feet into the gorge below.
26
Great Rift Valley The Great Rift Valley varies in width from thirty to one hundred kilometers, and in depth from a few hundred meters to several thousand meters. It was named by the explorer John Walter Gregory.
27
Mount Kilimanjaro Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. It is located in Northeast Tanzania, near the Kenya border. Kilimanjaro is an extinct volcano and is one of the most massive mountains in the world.
28
Mount Kilimanjaro For the adventurous, a climb of Mount Kilimanjaro is a must. Your climb would take you through the mists of the jungle to reach the snows and breath-taking views from the summit. Anyone up for a climb?
