The Synthesis Essay
2
Using the Sources Be sure to use as a minimum of 3 sources. (for a score of “adequate” 6) TAG them (in other words, put them in parentheses). Ex: As Winn argues, “…” (source A).
3
Have a dialogue The best papers are the ones that have a dialogue with the information presented in the sources. These papers do not regurgitate what has been presented, but use that information to support their own views.
4
The Introduction Contextualizes the issue at hand. Why should people care? Clearly states the writer’s thesis Do not use the “Webster’s Dictionary defines ____ as…” type of opening.
5
Conclusions Do not merely restate all of the points you have made or restate your entire introduction. Do not say, “In conclusion…” Answer this question: Why should informed citizens continue to think about the issues you have raised?
6
Support Back up everything you have to say with specifics. Just as you demand proof from persuasive essays, the readers will demand proof from your essay. PROVE IT!
7
You are not limited to the sources for proof. Outside knowledge is ENCOURAGED and REWARDED! Think: Geeks rule!
8
The other side of the argument Be sure to acknowledge the complexity of the issue at hand by discussing “the other side” Do not present the other side at the end of your paper and leave it to disprove all of the other points you have made. When you can, refute the other side.
9
Using Cartoons If one source is a cartoon, remember: Cartoons are not facts Write about them as insights, suggestions, accurate portrayals… Give the cartoonist’s name as the source (or use source A etc)
10
The Top Scoring Essays Contextualize the issue at hand Give a clear thesis that does justice to the complexity of the issue being considered Give extended consideration to the sources that they reference. Don’t merely cite sources but use them to prove a point
11
Top Scorers…continued Give some original thought to the issue Attribute sources and don’t just appropriate their ideas Conclude by addressing the big “so what?”
