An effective strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions must include: -Improved fuel economy -Reduce carbon content in fuels -Reduce the growth of vehicle miles of travel
3
Advantages Save fuel Reduces an individual’s carbon footprint Reduces congestion
4
CO2 emission could be reduced with 60% by 2050 by technological innovations and diffusion With public transportation it is reducing energy consumption and harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) greenhouse gas emissions that damage the environment
5
Public Transportation Transportation currently emits about 1/3 of all CO2 emissions; most of it by passenger cars Uses less energy Produces less pollution than comparable travel in private vehicles
6
US can save an equivalent of 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually- more than 11 million gallons of gasoline per day
7
Advantages Provides affordable alternative to driving Households that use public transportation save an average of $6,251 every year Make cars more efficient, reduce the number of miles traveled by the world’s cars
8
The Wedge Emission Savings Would be achieved if the fuel efficiency of all the cars projected for 2055 were doubled from 30 mpg to 60 mpg Achieved if the number of miles traveled by the world’s cars were cut in half
9
Suggestions To Reduce Carbon Emission Take up cycling- its cheaper and better for your health Take public transportation- in city it is easier to use the bus than finding parking space! Avoid flying- one long haul flight can increase your carbon footprint by up to 24% Drive Slower- cars use 25% less fuel at 55 mph than at 70 mph
