doc.: IEEE 802.11-05/0730r0 Submission July 2005 Stefano M. Faccin, NokiaSlide 2 Abstract This document contains the IEEE 802.11 – 3GPP2 liaison report for July 2005.

doc.: IEEE 802.11-05/0730r0 Submission July 2005 Stefano M. Faccin, NokiaSlide 3 3GPP2 Overview (1) What is 3GPP2? –Third Generation Partnership Project 2 –collaborative project born in 1998 out of the ITU International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT-2000) initiative –comprises North American and Asian interests developing global specifications for ANSI/TIA/EIA-41 network evolution to 3G, and global specifications for the radio transmission technologies supported by ANSI/TIA/EIA-41 –3GPP2 is a collaborative effort between five officially recognized SDOs acting as Operational Partners: ARIB - Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (Japan) CCSA - China Communications Standards Association (China) TIA - Telecommunications Industry Association (North America) TTA - Telecommunications Technology Association (Korea) TTC - Telecommunications Technology Committee (Japan) –In addition, Market Representation Partners (MRPs) who offer market advice to 3GPP2 and bring a consensus view of market requirements (e.g., services, features and functionality) participate to 3GPP2: The CDMA Development Group (CDG) IPv6 Forum International 450 Association (IA 450)

doc.: IEEE 802.11-05/0730r0 Submission July 2005 Stefano M. Faccin, NokiaSlide 4 3GPP2 Overview (2) How does it work? Four Technical Specification Groups (TSGs): –TSG-A (Access Network Interfaces) –TSG-C (cdma2000 ® ) –TSG-S (Services and Systems Aspects) –TSG-X (Core Networks ) More information on http://www.3gpp2.org

doc.: IEEE 802.11-05/0730r0 Submission July 2005 Stefano M. Faccin, NokiaSlide 5 3GPP2 Activities related to IEEE 802.11 (1) TGS S: –Stage-1 Requirements (S.R0087-0) published August 04 –Four main scenarios supported: Scenario 1: Common billing & Customer Care Scenario 2: Common authentication & WLAN Direct IP Access –Focus on 802.1X authentication with EAP-TLS; EAP-AKA –Access to IP connectivity, not 3GPP2 services Scenario 3: WLAN 3GPP2 IP Access –Authentication/authorization/accounting based on 3GPP2 Home System –Access to the 3GPP2 Home System packet data services Scenario 4: Session Continuity –continuity of a packet data session while switching of network connection takes places between the available access systems (e.g. WLAN-3GPP2)

doc.: IEEE 802.11-05/0730r0 Submission July 2005 Stefano M. Faccin, NokiaSlide 6 3GPP2 Activities related to IEEE 802.11 (2) TGS X: –Stage-2/3 Specification Phase I (X.P0028-0) completed (3Q04). Not published yet. Supports scenarios 1 and 2 –Stage-2/3 Specification Phase II (X.P0028-A). Completion aimed to 4Q05. Planned to support scenarios 3 and 4 Assumptions on 802.11: –Specifications currently assume no modifications to 802.11 specifications –Threat WLAN Access Network as a black box outside 3GPP2 control

doc.: IEEE 802.11-05/0730r0 Submission July 2005 Stefano M. Faccin, NokiaSlide 7 Liaison Statement Activities Currently no Liaison Statements’ exchange active TGu expects to liaise documents in the next meeting(s), to confirm TGu requirements 3GPP2 groups of interest for IEEE 802.11 are –TSG-S –TSG-X
