3 Where can we find added sugars?
Sugar can be added in the things we eat and drink to make them taste sweeter. Some people add more sugar to their cereals or hot drinks. Not everything that contains added sugar tastes sweet so we don’t always know if we are eating or drinking it. So what are added sugars and where can we find them? But some foods have added sugars to make them taste sweeter. Sugar can be added in the things lots of things we eat and drink Some people add more sugar to their cereals or hot drinks. 5 How can too much added sugar affect our health?
Can anyone tell me a reason why we shouldn’t have too much added sugar in our foods? Eating too much sugar can be bad for our teeth, eating and drinking too much can cause tooth decay and we may have to go and visit the dentist more. Too much sugar can make us become an unhealthy weight and can be bad for bodies.

This amount includes the sugar that is already in your food and any that is added. Its easy to have too much sugar in just one snack, meal or drink … shall we find out how? 4 to 6 year olds 7 to 10 year olds 11 years +

7 Sugar quiz! Let’s see how sugar smart we are by playing the sugar quiz! Split the school into two teams, team A and team B. Ask a teacher to keep track of scores. Ask a pupil from each team to answer each questions, the team with the most correct answers wins.

Apples are sweet and they do have some sugar in, but they are natural sugars and not added sugars. The natural sugars are found within the fruit and are broken down in our bodies in a different way.

13 Don’t forget to get the balance right …
Who can tell me what this picture is called? Does anyone know what it is trying to show us? This is the eatwell plate. It shows us the balanced of the different 5 food groups we need to stay healthy. We need to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and also starchy foods. We also need a good amount of meat, fish eggs and beans and also milk and diary food. As you can see the purple section is the smallest. This is the food group that contains all the food and drinks that are high in sugars and also fats. As you can see this food group is the smallest, so this reinforced the message that we need to eat less sugar!

14 What can we do now? Download the app Make sugar swaps
Tell our friends and families Eat less sugar! Now that we are sugar smart, what can we all do?! We can ask our grown ups at home to download the app so that we can scan our food and find out how much sugar is in it. We can make some sugar swaps, such as eating more fruit and vegetables instead of biscuits. We can tell our friends and families what we have learnt today. Let’s try to eat less sugar to make our bodies healthier.

15 Let’s be sugar smart! Now we are sugar smart, who thinks they can go home and share something they have learnt about sugar? Let’s all be sugar smart together!!! Thank you for listening.
