Feldman’s Model of Art Criticism From the work of Edmund Burke Feldman, During the late 1960’s and early 70’s 1. Description- List the visual qualities of the work that are obvious and immediate. “What do you see in the artwork”? Include content and subject matter in representational works- Include abstract elements in nonrepresentational pieces. 2. Analysis- Focus on the formal aspects of elements of art, principles of design. “How does the artist create a center of interest? How does the use of color impact the painting?” 3. Interpretation- Propose ideas for possible meaning based on evidence. “What was the artist trying to communicate”? 4. Judgment- Discuss the overall strengths/success/merit of the work. How and why has this work achieved cultural value?

Summary Baroque 1590s-1720s The Baroque period of art is a style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur. The popularity and success of the Baroque movement was encouraged by the Roman Catholic Church.

Interesting Facts About Artist Although his family was poor they took care of his education and enrolled into the university of Leiden at the age of 14 but because the program did not interest him he left to study art. the picture on bottom is believed to be a self portrait of him in the night watch behind the guard. The picture is of rembrandt’s town house in Amsterdam where he produced most of his works. Bought by him in 1639 later to become a house of tragedy after his wife and three of his children died there. Later becoming a financial burden in 1660 he was forced to move out. In 1911 the dutch movement made it a rembrandt museum preserving and imposing an example of 17 th century art
