Get the Facts!!!!! About 41% of students have consumed alcohol by 8 th grade. About 75% of students have consumed alcohol by the time they graduate high school. More than 50% of 12 graders say they have been drunk at least once. About 6% of youth ages 12 to 20 are heavy drinkers.

What is Alcohol? Alcohol: is a depressant that slows the central nervous system -Using alcohol 1.Slows reaction time 2.Impairs vision 3.Diminishes judgment

Alcohol -Found in beer, wine and whiskey. Alcohol effects a person physically and mentally.

Intoxication A state in which the body is poisoned by alcohol and the person’s physical and mental control is significantly reduced.

What is Binge Drinking? Drinking more than 5 or more alcoholic drinks in one sitting and increases the chances of alcohol poisoning.

How does Alcohol effect the body? Heart: Increased heart rate; makes heart work harder Liver: cannot regularly function; break down alcohol Long term: leads to scarring of liver= Cirrhosis Kidneys: increased urination, dehydration, headache, dizziness Blood Vessels: enlarged, feeling of warmth Stomach: Vomiting: which can lead to choking and death Long Term: Ulcers (open sores) in the stomach and stomach cancer. Brain: Motor skills are impaired and kills brain cells

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome -Fetal Alcohol Syndrome – caused by drinking during pregnancy; causes mental disability; results small eye slits in children, small head, delayed mental and physical growth (newborns are sometimes alcohol dependent, decreased muscle tone/coordination) - completely preventable -can also result in miscarriage - stillbirth
