Mr C Johnston ICT Teacher www.computechedu.co.uk BTEC IT Unit 02 - Lesson 10 Stand Alone System Performance

Session Objectives Know different criteria which can be used to evaluate a stand alone computer which has been setup for a user.

Evaluation Criteria After you have installed, configured and tested a system for a client or user you should reflect upon its performance in meeting the user needs, Key questions need to be answered within your reflection: How well does the system work? – analysis of your testing Is the operating system setup correctly? Are the correct device drivers installed? Do the software applications open and work as intended? Is the system configured correctly i.e. Are the default folder settings correct? Do the desktop shortcuts go to the right place? Do the menu options work as intended? Is the correct date and time set? Does the system fulfil each the user requirements defined earlier within the course

Improvements Once you have evaluated the performance of your system to get D2 you need to explain and justify improvements to it, Based on your findings in M3 you need to explain how the system can be improved to meet the needs more closely, Changes could be new hardware, new peripherals, new software etc. The changes need to be justified in terms of: How much the improvements are going to cost – are the potential gains worth it?? The potential gain the user will receive – do the changes actually meet the needs closer or are they a waste??

Task 2 – Part D [M3] [D2] This task requires you to write a report which evaluates how well the stand alone system you setup, configured and tested in P5, P6 and P7 works and meets the requirements of your client, You need to first of all evaluate the system in terms of how well it works – what went well in testing? what failed? Use the questions on the previous slide to help, Next you need to list the user requirements of the system and state how well these needs have been met or in some cases not, Finally explain how the system could be improved to meet the users needs more closely – remember to justify all changes in terms of cost and potential benefit Some improvements may not be worth it – still mention but conclude that they are not worth it.

M3 is an extension of P7. You should gauge system performance in your tests and evaluating the data. For D2, you should offer suggestions on how the system could be improved, considering costs involved and potential benefits gained. M3 – Evaluate the performance of a computer system. D2 – Explain and justify improvements that could be made to a computer system. M3 – Evaluate the performance of a computer system. D2 – Explain and justify improvements that could be made to a computer system. Evaluation of System Performance [M3], [D2] Analysis of Testing  Dsd  Sds Analysis of Meeting User Requirements  Dsd  Sds Evaluation based on all the bullets under red bullet point 1 on slide 3 [ ] List each user requirement and evaluate How well you have met / not met it [ ] Suggest how each user needs could be met more closely… need to explain the costs and benefits from each suggestion and justify if its worth it or not []
