Project Based Assessment Unit Two  Cooperation and Ancient Egypt

Review of Unit One Assessment At the end of unit one, you and the other leaders all figured out how to leave the life of hunting and gathering by creating city-states. You developed a plan that helped you do this. Turn and talk to discuss your plan and how you pulled off this amazing accomplishment!

What has been going on in our city- states? It has been five years since you created your city-state At first, things were going incredibly well! Your population grew to 100,000 people! People talked about how living in your city-state was so much better than constantly moving around and being hunters- gatherers. But things have changed for the worse…

What has been going on in our city- states? Your city has stopped growing at 100,000 There are problems tearing your city-state apart 1)People are arguing 2)There is a lack of food 3)The leadership(you) doesn’t seem to have a voice to make things better 4) THERE IS NO GROWTH! People are unhappy! They are talking about leaving your city-state to go back to a life of hunting and gathering! Your city-state is about to collapse and fail!

What has been going on in our city- states? You must save your city-state before it’s too late! You must figure out a way to bring your people together so they can cooperate and continue to help your city-state grow and become more powerful! If your system of cooperation does not CHANGE your city- state, it is doomed!

YOUR TASK (1)Using ideas from ancient Egypt, leaders must develop a system of cooperation that will help create organization and success in their city-state. (2)After creating your system of cooperation and organization, you must devise a speech and present it to all of your citizens explaining how this new plan will save the civilization. Choose your words wisely! They are very upset!

Step 1--Where do we begin? (1) develop an organized system of cooperation using ideas from ancient Egypt Think about what Egypt created to organize their people… You will have to create your own social pyramid for your society! Between 5-8 levels You must make your own ranks(can’t copy Egypt’s) and explain WHY you have placed each group where you did.

Develop a social structure Brainstorm a list of all of the possible jobs people could have in your ANCIENT society Think about jobs people had in Egypt and Mesopotamia Consider the land around you to help you think of work people will need to do(example  you may need people to cut stone out of mountains and people to build things with that stone)

BRAINSTORMING JOBS(PRACTICE) Example (modern America) Lawyers, plumbers, doctors, teachers, nurses, surgeons, college professors, president, Senate, mayors, judges, car mechanics, farmers, chefs, electricians, governors TRY TO BREAK THESE JOBS INTO CATEGORIES!

One of the possible groupings Lawyers, judges (judicial/law) plumbers, car mechanics, farmers, chefs, electricians (special services) doctors, nurses, surgeons (medical) teachers, college professors (education) President (leader) Senate, mayors, governors (government officials) This is only ONE possible combination, but you can decide how to rank them! Turn and talk about how you would rank these groups!

Your Turn! Take the list of jobs you thought of for your city-state and group them together appropriately! Then, rank your groups from highest to lowest. After looking at how you ranked all of your groups, you can create your own shape for your social structure. It doesn’t HAVE to be a pyramid if you think a different shape works better ***Think about what shapes will keep things working(do you want 5000 leaders?)

Once you have your shape…. Write up a quick explanation about WHY you put groups where you did.

Hints on the social class explanations 1) what kind of jobs are in this class? 2)how much power do they have? Why? 3) how many people? Why should there be this many people? Egypt example  government officials This class includes: mayors, governors, and military advisors. We ranked them second to highest because they have a lot of power. They carry out the pharaoh’s orders and live lives of luxury with lots of free time and wealth. There should only be ten or less because having too many would cause confusion and different rules would frustrate citizens.

Part 2--Your social structure 1)Draw up your social structure and write in your classes. 2)Inside the drawing(or on a separate piece of paper) attach your explanation of WHY you placed groups where you did. 3)Underneath the drawing(or on a separate piece of paper), write an explanation for why you think your shape is appropriate and can maintain order and cooperation.

Part 3-Explain it to your citizens with a speech! Your citizens have planned a protest tomorrow outside of your house. After the protest, they plan to leave your city- state forever. You must meet them outside and present them with a speech and the drawing of your social structure. You should EXPLAIN how this new social structure is going to help save the city-state. How will this start cooperation and help you grow?

Part 3 – Hints for your speech Have you explained…. 1) Why do you need to start cooperating? 2) How will your social structure encourage cooperation? 3) How will cooperation lead to growth? 4) Why should everyone (even the lowest classes) want to be a part of this? *Remember that people are angry because of lack of food, fighting, and lack of leadership and growth. How will your plan fix these problems? Make connections to ancient Egypt!!!
