Whole Group Instruction During whole group instruction I expect you to listen to me and save any information you would like to share till the end of my discussion. After I have a chance to give you instructions, we will work together to accomplish our reading goal. This is the time to ask me questions and also listen to questions from other classmates.

Turn and Talk / Small Groups After whole group instruction comes turn and talk time! Rules for turn and talk or group work are: 1.Allow all group members time to talk 2.Listen actively to 1 speaker at a time 3.Ask group members questions BEFORE asking the teacher
9
Why am I in this group? You are each sitting at your assigned group tables for a reason! Why? You are in mixed abilities groups. Everyone at your table can actively participate in discussions differently How? I used your interest surveys at the beginning of the year and notes from your previous teachers to arrange your seating!
10
I am finished…. On the board is a list of Must Do and May Do The Must Do list is assignments that you have been given during independent and group work time that must be finished first today! When you are done those you can choose any one of the May Do’s to work on Notice: The Must Do’s have an order to complete but the May Do’s don’t. You can work on any May Do in any order that you want!
11
Teacher Time Sometimes I will ask you to come see me and work with other students in a small group setting This means I want to give you some tasks that we have already worked on together as a whole class and see how you do “up close and personal!” I might take some notes but do not worry, this is not graded time! I want to see you do your best
12
Remember The Rules Respect the teacher during Whole Group Respect your classmates and group members during group work and turn and talk Complete Must Do’s first in order Choose a May Do of your own If nothing else to do while waiting for the teacher… visit our school library and read quietly!

Resources to use during the 5 th Grade Science Unit and a review for each Online stopwatch http://www.online-stopwatch.com/ I saw this on another teachers resource list. I use this stop watch instead of the smart board timer because the kids have access to it also! They can use it during fluency practice and also use It when reading in partners. I have the mobile computer lab come up and each student use this site to keep track of their routines and reading assignments. I love holding them accountable for working in a timely matter!

Create Your Own Museum This was a fun activity to use as an ice breaker. Recently I had students switch to new classrooms because of differentiated instruction. So I received 15 new students. I had them create a room with some information about themselves. They named the room after themselves or an interesting fact. We “visited” each room and tried to guess whose room it was. Then the students told us whose room it was and were able to introduce themselves in a brand new interactive way. Very cool…. http://museum.thinkport.org/

Wonderopolis http://wonderopolis.org/ The treasures reading program has some very boring writing prompts. I like to mix up writing and I love using science as a vehicle. This website has so many cool fun facts. The wonder of the day is the best morning work/ writing prompt idea yet! The kids ask me to visit the site every morning.

Illuminations http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivitySearch.asx By using the search engine I was able to find several smartboard activities for my students to get up and come to the board. It is not always easy to have students stay engaged and I am normally pretty good at realizing my lesson has gone sour. This is a great resource to quickly make my lesson alive again. I have searched everything from science to math and normally get some sort of connection. What a great addition to my bag of tricks!
