3 THEODORE ROETHKE – Timeline (1908-1963) Born in Saginaw, Michigan – son of German immigrants Family’s greenhouse was an important symbol in his poetry Father = Otto, a stern man that demanded son work hard in family business Topic = nature most often Taught @ universities; recognized as major American poet; won numerous awards including the Pulitzer Prize Suffered from alcoholism & mental health issues; often hospitalized

5 Notes about Making Electronic Note Cards 1. Click on Notecards at the top of the page 2. Add a new notecard: a. Title (main idea = use notations from margins) b. Source (from pull-down menu) c. Tag – type BP1, BP2, or BP3 d. Write ONE OR THE OTHER: a direct quotation (you are only allowed ONE of these) OR a paraphrase (when you take something from a source and you put it into your OWN WORDS!) e. ALWAYS add a PARENTHETICAL CITATION at the end of each direct quote or each paraphrase f. Do NOT complete the “My Ideas” box @ the bottom g. Remember, you are limited to 1 direct quote so the rest of the info MUST be paraphrased (i.e. summarized in your own words!)
