SAVING THE DISPOSABLE CAMERA TEAM 7 CLAYTON CASHION DANIEL WALSH JOHN KLUSEK NATHANIEL MATSUURA EDSGN 100 SECTION 008

TABLE OF CONTENTS Kodak Disposable Camera Design Identifying the Opportunity Presenting data from focus group Development of ideas Screening Ideas Design Improvements Final product Conclusion

KODAK DISPOSABLE CAMERAS Casing is made out of polystyrene The disposable camera functions through a series of gears which wind the film and prepare the system The flash is powered by a capacitor that is recharged by a AA battery

POLYSTYRENE IS… Plastic Sturdy and cheap Poses no risk if properly disposed Can be easily re-used

THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS ARE EXCESSIVE. A total of 138 flashes are held in the AA battery of a normal disposable camera A button cell provides the same amp*hrs for 12 cents compared to 23 cents for AA batteries

OUR CURRENT DISPOSABLE CAMERA DESIGN IS NOT SUSTAINABLE. Half of those surveyed have not used a disposable camera in the past 3 years Problems of appearance, convenience, and cost prevent use of disposable cameras Every camera contributes to electronic waste Old, unprofessional, bland

WE HAVE A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY… Overhaul the specifications of the disposable camera Make the disposable camera more appealing to the general public and increase sales. Decrease the amount of electronic waste.

CUSTOMER NEEDS ASSESSMENT Shows dissatisfaction with the case No issues with pricing

CRITERIA CONSIDERED DURING CONCEPT GENERATION Case design Sustainability Convenience Brainstorming Ideas Different Colors Spherical case Replace wheel with a lever Squish Camera Motorized Turn Wheel Replace wheel with a lever Switch AA to Button Cell Make the circuit board smaller Disposable Digital Camera

THE BATTERY NEEDS A CHANGE A button cell provides the same amp/hrs for 12 cents compared to 23 cents for AA batteries Exchanging the battery reduces overall case size, which reduces use of polystyrene Reduce costs

FINAL DESIGN IMPROVEMENTS Slim, streamlined casing decreasing use of polystyrene Efficient button cell technology High luster metallic colors

INVEST IN OUR DESIGN Make the disposable camera more appealing to consumers Increase sales of the disposable camera Increase sustainability
