Multiplying Polynomials with FOIL Objective: Students will multiply two binomials using the FOIL method. S. Calahan March 2008
2
FOIL method to multiply two binomials, find the sum of the products of to multiply two binomials, find the sum of the products of F the first terms O the outer terms I the inner terms L the last terms.
3
Example ( x + 3)(x – 2) ( x + 3)(x – 2) First: x (x) = x 2 Outer: x(-2) = -2x Inner: 3(x) = 3x Last: 3(-2) = -6
4
( x + 3)(x – 2) X 2 – 2x + 3x – 6 Combine like terms X 2 + x - 6
5
Example 2: (x-5)(x+7) First: x (x) = x 2 Outer: x(7) = 7x Inner: -5(x) = -5x Last: -5(7) = -35 x 2 + 7x – 5x - 35 x 2 + 7x – 5x - 35
6
x 2 + 7x – 5x - 35 Combine like terms. X 2 + 2x - 35
