Faces with FOIL Kayla Neatherlin

What is FOIL?  FOIL is an acronym used to multiply two binomials.  EX: (5x+2)(3x+1)

FOIL  F- First  O- Outer  I- Inner  L-Last  When done correctly, the FOIL method draws a face!

FIRST  The F stands for first  This tells us to multiply the first numbers in each parentheses together  EX: (5x+2)(3x+1)  Ans: 15x 2

Outer  The O stands for Outer, which means multiply the outer two terms together  EX: (5x+2)(3x+1)  Ans: 2

Inner  The I is for inner, meaning multiply the two innermost terms together.  EX: (5x+2)(3x+1)  Ans: 6x

Last  The L stands for last, which tells us to multiply the last two terms together.  EX: (5x+2)(3x+1)  Ans: 5x

Putting it altogether  Now that we have multiplied each term, add them all together  EX: 5x 2 +2+6x+5x  Reminder: Combine Like Terms!  Ans: 5x 2 +11x+2

Faces!  When you put all of the lines together in one problem, it draws a face!  EX: (5x+2)(3x+1)  Ans:15x 2 +11x+2

Wrap Up!  Today, we learned how to multiply using the FOIL method.  FOIL, when used correctly, will draw a face!  Don’t forget to be creative and color the faces on your homework assignment!
