After serving as secretary of state for only three months, Stephen F. Austin dies at the age of 43. Texas’s first empresario served as leader for all American colonists in Texas led the first major military conflict in the Revolution traveled to the United States to raise money for the war.

E VENTS / ISSUES TO KNOW DURING L AMAR ’ S T ERM The Council House Fight March 19, 1840 Comanche band of 65 came to San Antonio demanding ransom for white prisoners All Comanches were killed or captured Santa Fe Expedition 1841: President Lamar wanted to exploit trade on the Santa Fe Trail for Texas Texas traders and men of business escorted by 320 military staff The Texans were captured and held as prisoners in Mexico City before the U.S. government helped free them in 1842
