2 USE A STORY OR AN ANECDOTE An anecdote is a short story about something that happened, which illustrates the point you want to make in your essay. Using a story at the beginning of an essay is an effective way to interest the reader. However, do not tell a full length story!

3 “One sunny afternoon while walking Butters, my very sociable cattle dog, I decided to introduce him to Andre, my friend. At first, Butters was friendly, but as Andre turned to pet him, Butters leaped towards his hand and snapped at his fingers. Fortunately, Andre was uninjured, but I was very concerned about my dog’s behavior. I took Butters to my veterinarian to find out why he had acted so aggressively. The veterinarian, explained that there were three factors which could trigger an aggressive response from almost any dog.”

4 2. ASK A QUESTION Asking a question makes your audience think about your issue. If you raise a question make sure to answer the question in your paper. You don’t have to have the best answer, but you should fulfill the promise you made in asking the question by contributing your opinion.

5 “Can you imagine the disadvantages of growing up without an opportunity to receive an education?”

6 3. USE A SURPRISING FACT OR STATISTIC If you run across a surprising piece of information when writing or brainstorming, it may surprise and interest your audience. Show your audience something they do not know. Using this technique lets your audience know that you have more information that may be valuable or interesting.

7 “Shoveling snow is a very strenuous activity. Most people hate winter and hate snow. That is why there are so many snowbirds who flock to warmer clients during the winter months. But there are things that you can do in order to help snow shoveling be easier.”

8 PROVIDE BACKGROUND INFORMATION If your audience needs a brief history to understand your topic, provide the background – but only the necessary background.

9 “Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in the world. The prices of things in Tokyo are much higher than in other parts of Japan. Many people living in Tokyo have a difficult time paying for their lifestyles.”

10 THINGS NOT TO DO IN AN INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH 1. Apologize Never suggest that you don't know what you're talking about or that you're not enough of an expert. 2. Announce your intentions Do not directly announce what you are about to do in an essay: “In this paper I will... /The purpose of this essay is to...” 3.
