MASLOW ARRANGED THE NEEDS OF HUMAN BEINGS INTO A HIERARCHY. He argued that lower order needs must be satisfied before people become focused on achieving their higher order needs.

So how do employers satisfy these needs ?

BASIC NEEDS HAVE TO DO WITH SURVIVAL PHYSICALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY, SO INCLUDE FOOD WARMTH, SHELTER AND CLOTHING PHYSIOLOGICAL OR SURVIVAL NEEDS To satisfy these needs employers need to provide a living wage, and avoid paying piece rate

SAFETY NEEDS Safety needs are related to having confidence in the future, having security To satisfy these, provide contracts of employment, sick pay, pensions, pay salaries.

LOVE, AFFECTION, AND BELONGINGNESS NEEDS social needs, a need to belong, feel love and affection, to communicate These can be satisfied by group working, communication from management, quality circles, social working hours, holidays.

Self- esteem needs are all about feeling good about yourself, being appreciated, Self-esteem Chances for promotion, training, positive feedback from management

Self-actualisation means achieving what one is capable of, being given the freedom to control one’s destiny Self actualisation Empowerment, freedom to complete tasks, control over how work is done.
