4 What’s the actual difference? Vegetable: “A vegetable is the edible portion of a plant. 5 What’s the actual difference? Fruit: “A fruit is the mature ovary of a plant. So a tomato is botanically a fruit but is commonly considered a vegetable. 6 What’s the actual difference? You just read the botanical definition of a fruit and vegetable. However, cooking/grocery stores add some confusion about what is a vegetable vs. fruit
